Hi, I'm Helena

A passionate and student focused science teacher with 18 years experience, now a private tutor, helping GCSE students across Mid Devon build real confidence in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

My background

I am a fully qualified science teacher (QTS) and have taught GCSE sciences for   18 years. I understand that students who struggle, do so for many different reasons and most weren't lacking ability — they just needed someone to explain things in a way that made sense to them.

That's what drives me as a tutor. I take the time to understand exactly where a student needs support and I find the explanation that works for them — whether that's a different analogy, a worked example, or simply slowing down and going back to basics.

I now work exclusively as a private tutor, which means every session is focused entirely on your child. No classroom distractions, no one-size-fits-all lessons — just patient, personalised support. I do not offer online sessions. Experience tells me that knowing my students enables me to plan specifically for them as individuals, to have empathy when they struggle and to adapt accordingly in that moment. This can only happen face to face.

How I work

We start with a chat

Before the first session, I like to have a brief conversation with parents and students to understand what's going well, what isn't, and what the goals are.

Sessions are tailored

I plan each session around the student's current needs — whether that's catching up on a topic, preparing for a mock, or working through past papers.

Progress is tracked

I keep notes after every session and share regular updates with parents so everyone knows how things are going.

Confidence comes first

Grades matter, but so does how a student feels about science. I aim for both — better results and a student who actually enjoys the subject.

  • PGCE in Secondary Science
  • 18 years classroom teaching experience
